CACTUS DEVELOPMENT

A PROMISING SOURCE OF ACTIVE INGREDIENTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

VALORISATION DU CACTUS

UM6P-ASARI initiated an innovative project, supported by Phosboucraa Foundation, to promote cactus resources (Opuntia spp.) as a promising source of active ingredients. By focusing on agronomic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical aspects, this project aims to fully exploit the potential of this emblematic plant, while creating new economic opportunities for local communities.

Through this initiative and thanks to the contribution of the Phosboucraa Foundation,
ASARI is committed to achieving a number of key sustainability goals. This project, by selecting three specific species of cacti, namely Opuntia stricta, Opuntia megacantha and Opuntia ficus-indica, aims to evaluate their properties and their potential for use in the agronomic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical fields. These efforts are supported by a solid scientific basis and the integration of environmentally friendly practices.
As part of this collaboration, a tissue culture laboratory was installed and equipped, and a local cactus collection was also established to ensure that the genetic diversity of these species is preserved. Thanks to micro-propagation in vitro and in vivo acclimation in a dedicated greenhouse, sustainable cactus production was guaranteed. Furthermore, an in-depth biochemical characterization of the cactus extracts was carried out, revealing the presence of various bioactive compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids, highlighting their strong antioxidant, cosmetic and pharmaceutical potential.

Impact on the environment and local communities

Promoting the exceptional properties of the cactus contributes greatly to the preservation of biodiversity and natural resources. In addition, thanks to the training of a post-doctoral student, this project ensures the development of local skills and encourages scientific research in the region. This project also resulted in a scientific publication, thus sharing knowledge and strengthening international recognition of the work accomplished.

By preserving biodiversity and promoting the conservation of natural resources through the development of cacti, this project contributes to meeting SDG 15 (Life on land). It also supports SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) by encouraging scientific research and developing local skills in the field of plant valorization. Additionally, by using environmentally friendly practices, the project contributes to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable use of plant resources.
